Well, I found there is a way. There is an option in the boot menu (if you hit F8 during the boot process). That's the good news. The bad news is that I did this, the driver loaded, and I tested my device. I was able to connect to the software that supports the device, it started to update the firmware, then, part way through, Win7 crashed - BSOD: System Service Error.

Same thing happened a second time, and, after that, I was unable to connect to the device either in Win7 or Vista (32-bit), and the firmware seems shot. I am in touch with the manufacturer of the device to find out if and how I can reset it! A further incidental point is that it does not seem possible to both Disable Driver Signature checking, and Disable Automatic Restart after Failure in the same boot.

So, either the driver doesn't install, or I can't read the error details on the BSOD!
