Gibson Les Paul Cracked Binding
Jan 17, 2015. My Gibson Les Paul Standard 1992 has small binding cracks but so is my 1995 Epiphone Joe Pass (obviously no nibs). I always thought it was caused by the crazy weather change we have here in Quebec and the dryness caused by electrical baseboard heating. It doesn't really bother me as I don't feel it. A Gold Top Gibson Les Paul. This one was built in 1969 shortly before the design changes of the Norlin era, making this a somewhat valuable guitar. Most luthiers take the easy way out when refretting a Les Paul or similar guitar that has a bound fingerboard, the type with small nubs covering the end of the frets, by simply filing them off. Other luthiers. Loose or cracked binding is typically a result of shrinkage, either that of the binding itself, or that of the wood it is glued to.

I was looking over my les paul today, cleaning it and such. And right below the fretboard where the neck meets the body theres a hairline crack, I don't know if it's the wood or just the paint but I'm pretty much freaking out. It stops, then theres another one right under where the fretboard meets the neck, it really doesn't look like it's supposed to be there. Do you think it's something in the wood or just the paint cracking? Also, there was this weird black/brown stuff on the bottom, I don't know how it got there, it took of some of the binding to get it off. So i'm pretty much pissed. This is a Gibson LP we're talking about. Though I suspect that it's only a finish crack and will not affect the guitar in any way. I don't know about Gibson, but I know that Fenders are notorious for having harmless finish cracks near the neck joint. If you are still worried and you're the original owner. Maybe you have a waranty? Can you post a picture of it?
